due dates are evil

Wording is probably the culprit. "Due date" implies a date when something will be done. For instance, taxes have a due date. So do papers in college or projects at work. Most "due dates" in my life have not been sliding and have left little to no room for tardiness.

But here I am, with one of the most important due dates in my life...giving birth...and I am overdue. I slept very little last night. I have become obsessed with being overdue. For a fleeting moment I entertained the thought that perhaps I'd be pregnant until October. I even double checked my due date last night...the math is correct. Imagine that, my midwives know what they're doing. :) My worst case scenario was that my body was physically unable to give birth this time around, and I'd most definitely have to have a c-section. My mind was running wild. Finally I slept.

I saw Jeanne today. According to my chart I'm 40 weeks and 1 day. Full-term. When you hit the 40 week mark there are a couple of tests waiting for you. I had a Non-Stress Test and a sonogram. A sneak peek at the baby this close to delivery may sound like a treat but in fact everything is so compact in there that you really can't see much. They took some measurements and reassured both my midwife and I that everything really is okay...just slower than expected. They even measured my fluid levels during the sono (which are fine). I commented that I'd never had that done before. Jeanne replied, "You get to do this when you reach 40 weeks." Yeah for me. :) Jeanne also reminded me that according to the baby's measurements at the 20 week sono, my due date would be closer to September 9th. Since it was less than 5 days away from my original date (the 5th) they didn't change it. Maybe this baby thinks it's due date is actually the 9th. Perhaps in it's mind it is still early.

I guess there's no reason to not finish weeding the rock walkway that lines our driveway. I guess Brad should mow our yard one more time so that post-baby visitors won't have to hike through to reach our front door. I guess I still have time to clean our floors at least one more time before the baby arrives. Oh joy. :)

Pencil in September 12th on your calendar. (It's in pen on mine.) That's the day they've schedule my induction. If this baby doesn't come out on it's own, they'll do their best to coax it out that day.
